Australian government to open school for refugees (11/12/07)

The Australian Government is planning to start two schools for Zimbabwean asylum-seekers and refugees in South Africa, according to a senior diplomat in Pretoria.

"The Zimbabwean Government has destroyed the education sector in the country and the level of poverty is ever increasing. Because of this situation, thousands of students are leaving schools and coming to South Africa where they are finding it difficult to access education," said the diplomat, who declined to be named in line with Embassy policy.

"Given this crisis, our Government is planning to start at least two schools for Zimbabweans, especially the asylum-seekers and refugees at Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg."

Thousands of Zimbabweans have been offered accommodation by Bishop Paul Veryen, also known as Father Zimbabwe, at the church.

Vereyn said: "The church is accommodating all professions and we have teachers among them who are enough to provide the service required to teach some fellow Zimbabweans."
