Germany donates €3.85 million to support WFP (28/11/07)

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed donations totalling €3.85 million from Germany. The funding provides vital support to WFP’s programmes in 10 countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

"These contributions are especially welcome because they will help people who are not in the headlines," said Monika Midel, Director of WFP Berlin office. "Germany's continued strong support for our relief and development operations means that we can provide food assistance to those people who are the most vulnerable and in need."

The donations from Germany are channelled through the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and bring the total donations from Germany to WFP this year to €43.9 million.

Out of the €3.85 million donation, WFP's activities in Zimbabwe, a country with particularly high food insecurity, will receive €750,000. This will ease the acute food needs of highly vulnerable groups in both urban and rural areas. In October alone, WFP reached 1.6 million people in Zimbabwe - most of them children and those affected by HIV and AIDS.

WFP's project in Sri Lanka will receive €750,000 to assist people affected by conflict. In the wake of renewed hostilities, WFP has been providing emergency assistance to internally displaced people (IDPs) and other conflict-affected families. Recently, WFP had been running short of rice in Sri Lanka.

In Afghanistan, €500,000 will be used to support the school feeding programme under which WFP provides school meals to 2.5 million children in the country.

WFP's programme in Burundi will receive €500,000 for assistance to Burundian returnees from Tanzania. WFP returnee rations serve the dual purpose of promoting the return and reintegration of people into their original communities.

The chronic food needs of 1.9 million people whom WFP is supporting in the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) will receive €250,000. Special focus is given to capacity building and improved food security through support for factories producing fortified foods under the local food production programme.

The emergency operation in Ghana will receive €250,000 in support of 20,000 victims of the recent flooding - most of them IDPs in the northern regions of the country.

WFP assistance to the two drought-affected countries of Lesotho and Swaziland will each receive €250,000.

In Uganda, a contribution of €250,000 will provide assistance to people affected by heavy rains and floods since July. More than 300,000 people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance. WFP also provides food to 1.2 million IDPs in rural camps and transit sites.

And finally, €100,000 will support 20,000 food insecure people in Yemen who have been displaced by heavy fighting around the governorate of Sa'ada in the north-west of the country.
