ITU to host Global ICT Forum in Geneva in December (20/11/07)

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has announced that it will be hosting a special Global Forum on Effective Use of Telecommunications in Geneva on 10-12 December 2007.

The event, which will take place under the subheading of ICT for Disaster Management: Saving Lives, will bring together the main stakeholders active in developing, deploying and using telecommunications/information communication technology (ICT) for disaster mitigation. It will serve primarily as a forum in which they can map out concrete strategies and adopt practical measures.

With natural disasters becoming an ever more frequent threat to lives and national economies, severely weakening affected countries, information and communication technology (ICT) has an increasingly significant role to play in limiting their impact on sustainable development.

This event contributes to the progress made at the United Nations International Meeting to Review the Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (Mauritius, 10-14 January 2005), the World Conference on Disaster Reduction (Kobe, Japan, 18-22 January 2005), and a series of other events having focused among other things on the establishment of a Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System for the Indian Ocean.

A number of partnership agreements and memoranda of understanding will be signed on 10 December between ITU and its partners. These agreements will focus on co-financing future activities aimed at mitigating the impact of disasters through the use of emergency telecommunications.

The Humanitarian Development Program will be present at the Global Forum, with its Managing Director John Glassey chairing a special panel session on the role of NGOs in ICT development.
