Diabetes – UN support for World Diabetes Day (14/11/07)

“No child should die of diabetes”. This slogan of World Diabetes Day, taking place on the 14th November, focuses on the alarming progression of the disease, or more precisely of its different forms because there are diabetics among children and adolescents.

More than 200 associations have been mobilised into action in 150 countries. The event is on an exceptional scale. In fact, it is the first time that World Diabetes Day has been officially recognised by the United Nations, which has chosen to formally alert the international community to the extent of this problem.

To mark this new event, 200 key buildings will be illuminated in blue, all over the world. Buildings include the Empire State Building in New York, the Sydney Opera House, the Tower of Pisa and the world’s tallest building, the Tapei Tower in Taiwan.

“These illuminated buildings will represent sources of hope for the 246 million people suffering from diabetes throughout the world” Professor Martin Silink, President of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has stated. "This figure is continuing to rise and could reach 380 million – an increase of 55% – in 20 years’ time!" he added.
