Makerere University to build its own hostels (12/11/07)

Makerere University has revealed plans to start constructing its own hostels.

"We formulated and passed a strategic plan for the convocation (2006-2010) and we have been able to save about Shs 300 million for the construction of our own hostels in Katanga," Mr Bruce Balaba the chairperson of the Convocation said.

He was addressing the 16th annual general meeting of the convocation at Senate building. By constructing own hostels the university is making its idle land, especially in the slams of Katanga valuable.

Recently the land was apportioned by squatters who took the university to court claiming to be the right owners of the land. Katanga lies in the valley between Makerere Hill, where the main campus sits, and Mulago Hospital. The university owns 30 acres of land in Katanga.
