Nigerian and Swiss governments explore crop partnership (07/11/07)

The Nigerian and the Swiss governments are to partner on crop protection to boost agricultural production in Nigeria.

Nigerian Agriculture and Water Resources Minister, Abba Sayyadi Ruma, stated this when he received the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Pierre Helg, who paid him a courtesy call.

Mr. Ruma lamented that Nigerian farmers had over the years incurred huge losses due to the menace of Quela birds and other crop-destroying pests. To redress this ugly situation, the Minister told the Swiss Ambassador of the present Administration’s commitment to deploying modern techniques of crop protection.

To this end, he said Nigeria was ready to partner with foreign governments and private investors on the production and procurement of agro chemicals to ensure higher yields in crop production.

Earlier, in his remarks, the Swiss ambassador told the Minister that the embassy was going to host the Abuja Diplomatic Business Forum to sensitize the diplomatic and business communities on the immense business opportunities that abound in both countries.

Amongst other things, the Swiss envoy said this year’s forum would focus on government’s strategy for the evolution of a competitive agricultural economy in Nigeria as part of his home government’s contribution to the realization of the seven-point agenda of the President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Administration
