Norway pledges US70 million to Zambia (22/10/07)

Norway has pledged US70 million to Zambia as a budgetary support.

Norwegian ambassador to Zambia Terje Vigtel has said that the money the Norwegian government will next year give will go to budgetary support in the education sector, environment and climate and governance.

"We are going to concentrate on these three sectors based on some factors, firstly this is what Zambia needs as requested by the Zambian government and secondly, it is in line with the Norwegian policy and division of labor between donors.

We are trying to share as donors, we don't want to all be in one field," he said.

He said the Norwegian government is also supporting development in the Luangwa Valley in the east of the country. Support is not only meant for the national park there but it is important to encourage people to be employed instead of poaching, he said.

He said governance is the support to the anti-corruption work and to the justice area.

Vigtel said the Norwegian government is fully behind Zambia in its efforts to fight corruption.
