Isingiro village tops Africa (30/05/07)

The United Nations Millennium Village Project in Ruhiira in Isingiro district has been rated the best performer among the 12 millennium villages in 10 African countries.

Theophane Nikyema, the UN resident coordinator, said the rating was based on agricultural output, infrastructure development, ownership of development programmes, linkages with the government, improvement in health, education, enterprise, water and sanitation.

Nikyema said this on Thursday during a visit to Ruhiira village on Thursday.

He said the Millennium Villages Project aims at helping poor villages in Africa become self-sustaining units by 2015.

This is done through investments and interventions in health, food production, education, access to clean water and building of essential infrastructure such as roads, he said.
