President Paul Kagame looks for creative investment (28/05/07)

Looking for "fresher, larger" and more diversified investments, Rwandan President Paul Kagame welcomed speakers and investors to the Fourth International Investment Conference, with a call for more creative investments.

The congregation of business and political leaders came at a time, the president said, when Rwanda was looking to take development to a "higher ground," referring specifically to the country's peace and stability as early stepping stones, before placing this conference in a greater national narrative.

"History teaches a great deal in this regard: How have countries made a decisive leap from poverty to prosperity? Who does what in this endeavour?"

In this regard, a dynamic, two-way partnership between the public and private sectors was the most efficient and promising prescription, he said.

The president noted that this formula had lifted 'millions' out of poverty in Asia. And the government had an eminent role to play, the president said, in this regard.

"The responsibility of raising the living standards and prosperity of Rwandan people lies primarily with its government, people, and institutions."

This was why, the president said, his country was supporting all investors. But Rwanda is not just banking on private-sector investment; it is making it an un-retractable component of future development, he added.
