AU's headquarters to grow after $150 million deal with China (22/05/07)

The Chinese government and the African Union (AU) have signed a $150 million agreement for the expansion project of the AU headquarters, located in Addis Ababa.

In 2004, the then mayor of Addis Ababa Arkebe Equbay, announced a land grant title deed worth $28 million for the AU headquarters.

The project has now been revived after AU representatives travelled to China to sign the agreement. The plot would be used to satisfy the office expansion needs of the AU and for the construction of residential houses for the Deputy Chairperson and the eight Commissioners, as well as for building chanceries and residences.

The Chinese government is to fully finance the cost of the buildings.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government appointed its first Ambassador Liu Guijin, as its special representative on African affairs, last week.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said as a veteran diplomat, Mr Liu was well aware of African affairs and once served as the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Director-General of the Department of African Affairs and the Chinese Ambassador to South Africa.

"Ambassador Liu will make relentless efforts to strengthen our work on Africa, maintain close contact with African countries and regional organizations and promote continuous development of China-Africa relations," he said.

South Africa's Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma arrived in China on Sunday, where she met her Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi, for talks on the status of bilateral political and economic relations between their two countries.

This meeting comes three months after the Chinese President Hu Jintao visited South Africa and held extensive discussions with President Thabo Mbeki on economic, political, cultural issues, among other issues.

Their discussions culminated in the signing of seven agreements of co-operation in different sectors.
