Riley builds Sh22b packaging plant (18/05/07)

Riley Industries will open its $13m (about sh22b) packaging plant in August, a top official has disclosed.

The Mukono-based plant is expected to fill the increasing demand gap for packaging and printing materials.

It is also expected to employ more than 300 people, Ashish Thakkar, the managing director, said.

He said the plant would produce quality boxes with high resolution graphics. "We have installed fully-automated and computerised machinery to produce quality packaging materials," Thakkar said. He explained that the plant occupies 150,000 square feet, making it the widest single span factory in East Africa.

He said the plant also includes an in-house design studio that is able to implement customised creative designs and carry out research and development for the new products.

"We have also invested another $1m is setting up Riley Media, a plant for large format digital printing," Thakkar added.

He was speaking during a tour by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) officials led by Dr. Maggie Kigozi on Wednesday. "We have promoted this sector in the last six years and this is the first largest packaging plant in Uganda.

"This is good for quality packaging of our exports," said Kigozi.
