Germany offers EUR1 million to the WTO (26/04/07)

Germany has donated EUR1 million (about CHF1.6 million) to the Doha Development Agenda Global Trust Fund for 2007.

Germany’s total contribution has now reached CHF11.6 million making it the second biggest voluntary donor.

This grant will finance technical assistance programmes and training activities for developing and least developed countries as well as economies in transition. The aim is to better adapt their practices and laws to WTO rules and disciplines, improve the implementation of their obligations and enhance the exercise of their membership rights.

WTO Director General Pascal Lamy declared “With this additional donation, Germany demonstrates its commitment to support developing countries in fully benefiting from the multilateral trading system.”

German Ambassador Steiner stated “Being a big trading nation itself Germany sincerely hopes to assist developing countries in exploiting more fully the potential for growth and poverty reduction of international trade.”
