Health ministers discuss equity and development (10/04/07)

African health ministers are meeting in Johannesburg in order to find ways to promote equality and strengthen the continent's development through their sector.

The ministers plan to develop a health strategy aimed at contributing to Africa's socio-economic development, by dramatically improving the health of its people and ensuring access to essential health care for all Africans by 2015.

Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will officially open the 3rd Session of the African Union conference of Ministers of Health on Tuesday evening.

The ministers have however, been meeting since Monday, under the theme "Strengthening Health Systems for Equity and Development."

The AU Conference of Ministers of Health provides an opportunity for African Health Ministers and partners to share experiences and best practices on how to improve the health situation in Africa.

The conference will conclude on 13 April, after which outcomes of the meeting will be submitted to the Assembly of African Union Heads of State and Government.

In addition, the anticipated strategy will indicate what countries and regions need to do to develop national policies and strategies focused on integrated health systems.
