UK aid is increasing and we are delivering says Benn (02/04/07)

Hilary Benn, the International Development Secretary, welcomed figures published today that show that the UK is on track to meet its international commitment to give 0.7 per cent of national income to fighting poverty in developing countries by 2013.

In 2006, the UK spent an estimated £6.85 billion on official development assistance (ODA) which represents 0.52 per cent as a proportion of Gross National Income (GNI) and an increase from 0.47 per cent last year according to provisional figures published today by the Department for International Development.

Hilary Benn said that the figures underlined the UK’s continuing commitment to fighting poverty and sent a strong signal to other donors to meet their commitments.

But showing what the aid is delivering and how it is making a real difference to poor people’s lives was essential to maintain the UK’s support for a growing aid budget.
