The World Bank extends additional financing (30/03/07)

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors today approved an International Development Association (IDA) financing in the amount of US$25 million to support the Road Sector Investment Program in Zambia through additional financing to the on-going IDA-funded Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance Project.

The Additional Financing to the Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance Project is aimed at complementing the Zambian Government's effort to repair and restore roads, bridges and culverts that were damaged or washed away in several parts of the country as a result of floods over the past years.

The total number of river crossing structures to be financed is about 180, mostly ranging from 15 meter long bridges to culverts in [three Provinces, Copperbelt, Luapula and Northern Provinces].

The construction of the Chiawa Bridge across the Kafue River leading to the Lower Zambezi National Park and the design of the Mufuchani Bridge across the Kafue close to Kitwe will also be supported.

The project will cover four of the nine provinces including the Kafue, Mosi-Oa-Tunya, Lochinvar and Lower Zambezi National Parks. Tenders for the first work packages in Luapula Province and the four National Parks have already been advertised and the remainder will follow shortly.
