AIG to aid village banks (19/03/07)

AIG President. Julio Partalatin has pledged more support for the Kisowera Village Banking project to help the women improve on their household incomes and get out of poverty.

He made the offer during a visit to the FINCA Village Banking group in Kisowera on March 15, after discovering that many women are registering resounding success in their small businesses because of the village banking scheme.

"As you struggle to fight poverty, count on AIG's and FINCA's support for your development to improve on your future," Mr Portalatin said.

He hailed the group for embracing the scheme and being faithful members united to front each other's growth in FINCA. FINCA is a non-governmental financial institution that supports women development projects and has been in partnership with AIG for the past 10 years. One of the beneficiaries of the scheme, Hajjat Lukiya Namuddu of Nalya Village, Kisowera Mukono, said she has improved on her business after borrowing Shs600, 000, which has enabled her to look after her eight orphaned grand children.

According FINCA Chairperson Betty Namuswa, the Kisowera group has 35 members who meet regularly to pay back the loans, share experiences on businesses and other social issues
