Nigerian government to provide 1 million mini silos for farmers (18/03/07)

The Nigerian government is to provide 1 million mini silos for farmers to improve agricultural performance and storage facilities.

Olatunji Adenola, director of Nigeria's National Strategic Food Reserves Department, said that each silo has capacity to store one ton of grains like maize, millet, sorghum and cow peas for varying shelf periods.

The silos were made with 100 percent galvanized local tank with the concept of the old local storage system, he said.

"The indoor storage system is a modern technology tested and certified by the UN and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources with 30 years life span," he added.

According to him, the silos were funded by the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) program and highly subsidized by government.

He said the program was conceptualized in 2006 and that the first phase was to produce 20,000 silos for 20 states, while the second phase would produce 25,000 units for 19 states.

The director said the projects were necessary for government's food security program to succeed because 80 percent of food to be stored was sourced from local farmers.

Adequate arrangements had been put in place under the supervision of the MDG, the United Nations Development Program ( UNDP) and government agents to ensure that it was only local farmers that benefited from the silos program, he added.
