Post-flood donations from Mozambican (17/03/2007)

Donations from the Mozambican government's "national and international partners" for humanitarian assistance in the wake of the Zambezi floods, and cyclone Favio, currently amount to about 15 million U.S. dollars.

A government statement saying that with these funds, plus the 4.6 million dollars the government has disbursed from the state budget, "it has been possible to guarantee food supplies, health care, continued education, and water supplies for the victims."

"Efforts in this direction will continue while those affected do not have their own means of sustenance," said the statement.

The government, it said, "urges the private sector and the civil society to continue showing their solidarity with those affected, thus contributing to a rapid normalization of their lives within the context of the reconstruction plan."

It also urged foreign donors and agencies "to continue working under the government's coordination, and to involve communities actively in all activities of managing the accommodation centers and national reconstruction."
