Ndung'u new central bank governor (02/03/07)

Professor Njuguna S Ndung'u is the new Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor

President Kibaki appointed Njuguna, currently the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Director of Training, to the plum job on Thursday.

A statement signed by Finance minister, Mr Amos Kimunya, said the President had appointed Ndung'u as Governor for a period of four years, effective March 4, 2007.

His appointment brought to an end the eventful tenure of Dr Andrew Mullei, currently embroiled in a court case over alleged abuse of office.

A long-time researcher with the AERC network, Ndung'u has published in international journals as well as in chapters of books on economic policy issues ranging from economic growth, poverty reduction, inflation, interest rate and exchange rate issues, to macroeconomic performance in sub-Saharan Africa, financial management and public sector growth.

He previously worked as Regional Programme Officer for the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office, Nairobi, of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada.

He also worked with the Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) as a Principal Analyst/Researcher and Head of the Macroeconomic and Economic Modeling Division.

He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and masters and bachelor's degrees in economics from the University of Nairobi.
