High-Level mission to boost fishing in Kenya's largest lake (27/02/07)

Researchers have launched a project expected to boost fish production in Lake Turkana.

It will improve the livelihood of Turkana people, the majority of whom are ravaged by drought every year.

The initiative, by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), is funded by the Government and targets aquatic resources in the lake, particularly fish products.

Turkana, located in an expansive and semi-arid land (ASAL), is the largest lake in Kenya.

The study is aimed at assisting the mainly pastoral and marginalised communities resident near Lake Turkana to reduce their poverty levels by increasing and diversifying their income through sustainable utilisation of fish.

The lake is increasingly becoming a centre of attention, owing to its vast aquatic resources, especially fish like Nile perch.
