Texas tycoon eyes Nairobi for business (11/02/07)

A Texas billionaire said on Friday he plans to travel soon to Nairobi to explore the launch of call-centre businesses.

Much like India has done, Kenya could build a booming Information Technology (IT) industry on a base of companies specialising in telephone solicitations to the United States, said Ross Perot Jr.

The chairman of Perot Systems, a global IT company, discussed his vision for Kenya at an African-American Chamber of Commerce forum held last week in Dallas, Texas. On hand to meet with Texan investors were Nairobi mayor Dick Wathika, Kenya Export Promotion Council manager Maurice Abuom, and half-a-dozen Kenyan executives in the coffee, tea and honey sectors.

"I'm urging African countries, including Kenya, to study the India model," said Mr Perot, the son of former US presidential candidate H Ross Perot.

The elder Perot, an oil baron, ranks among the world's wealthiest men.

Mr Perot Jr suggested Kenya could be especially well positioned to emulate India's success with call centres because many Kenyans have ties to India.

Perot Systems operates in India as well as in several other countries, employing a total of 22,000 people worldwide.

"I would love to work with the Kenyan government and with Kenyan companies on IT solutions," the younger Perot added.
