State earns Sh1.3bn from cost sharing (02/02/07)

The Health ministry collected Sh1.3 billion last year from the cost sharing programme, up from Sh845 million the previous year.

Permanent secretary Hezron Nyangito attributes the rise to the number of people accessing health centres in the country.

"More and more people are now turning to government hospitals for treatment, unlike before, hence increasing money collected through cost-sharing," he said.

The money has helped to improve health services in the country, said Dr Nyangito.

The programme is a government initiative to share the cost of treatment with the public, to ensure maintenance of hospitals.
