Kenya and Uganda keen on cargo (14/01/07)

Transport Ministers from Kenya and Uganda will continue with physical inspection of the Northern Corridor route from the Malaba border up to Kampala as a way of smoothening the movement traffic and cargo from Mombasa port.

In a joint statement issued in the Kenyan capital Nairobi on January 11, Kenyan Transport minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere and his Ugandan counterpart John Nasasira said they had thoroughly inspected vital sections along the Kenyan side of the corridor and identified sections that needed immediate action.

The Northern Corridor route stretches from Mombasa port in Kenya to Kampala. It is the traditional route used by importers and exporters most of the countries ithin the region. Uganda is the biggest user of Mombasa port in the region.

The ministers also said transit toll charges be harmonised between the two countries as soon as possible but not later than June.

They lauded efforts by the revenue authorities of both countries in carrying out joint verification mechanisms and harmonised working hours at the Malaba border post.

However, the ministers decried damage done on roads by trucks with fixed quadruple axles at the rear and resolved that partner states in the region institute public awareness and fully enforce traffic laws governing axle loads and gross weight limitations by June.

In order to reduce transportation costs and save road carnage by diverting heavy road loads to rail, the ministers recommended the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Inland Container Depots, ICDs, in Nairobi and Eldoret be utilised for handling transit traffic.

At the same time, the ministers urged shippers in the region to make necessary arrangements to clear various cargo including motor vehicles that have overstayed at the port.

They said KRA should pass over information on such cargo to the Uganda Revenue Authority for advertisement in the Ugandan local media.
