Power project gets Sh3.3 billion (10/01/07)

Japan yesterday offered a Sh3.3 billion loan for the Sondu Miriu hydropower project.

Up to 81 megawatts in additional power will be added to the national grid when the Sondu Miriu Power project is commissioned later in the year, the Treasury said.

The loan will be used on the proposed Sang'oro power plant, an extension of the grand project expected to start power production in November. Carried out in three phases, the near complete phase two of the project will input 60MW while the third will inject a further 21.2 MW.

"Phase two which is ongoing includes civil works and engineering consulting services for the installation of turbines and generators including an associated transmission line to Kisumu," Finance minister Amos Kimunya said.

The loan is to be disbursed through the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation. Japanese ambassador Satoru Miyamura signed the deal with Mr Kimunya. Stage two of the project, which cost Sh6.2 billion, will be commissioned in November.

Mr Kimunya pledged that energy allocations would be reviewed and redirected to focus on generation needs. Also present was Energy minister Kiraitu Murungi.
