There is cash for projects, says Michuki (08/01/07)

The Government has set aside enough funds to revive collapsed projects in Coast Province a Cabinet minister has said.

"Among the targeted project is Ramisi Sugar Factory, which will be revived before the end of this year, said Internal Security minister John Michuki.

Speaking in Magarini in Malindi District at the weekend, the minister said: "The Kilifi Cashewnut Factory, the Kenya Meat Commission's factory at Kibarani in Mombasa and the Mariakani Milk Scheme are among projects targeted for revival before the General Election in December."

Mr Michuki made the remarks at Bathe Primary School when he toured the district and led a relief food distribution to flood victims in the area.

The minister said: "The move is not political. The Government is doing its duty of providing services to its citizens."

He continued: "Some people are saying we are doing this because of the General Election this year. This is not true. We are doing this as part of the Government's duty to change the lives of its citizens," he said.

The minister and his entourage moved around in three helicopters to see the distribution of the relief food to 6,261 displaced residents.

He was in a Kenya Wildlife Service helicopter in the company of his permanent secretary Cyrus Gitui, Coast provincial commissioner Ernest Munyi and Malindi and Magarini MPs Mr Lucas Maitha and Mr Harry Kombe respectively.

Mr Michuki said an MP or leader who distanced himself from the Government should not expect to do much for their people because "if a child bites the nipples of its mother's breasts, it can not continue to suck milk".

Mr Maitha urged the Government to construct dams on River Sabaki to control floods. Mr Kombe urged it to build dykes and gabions on the river banks.
