Farmers to access Kenya border market (04/01/07)

Rural farmers will easily access the Uganda-Kenya border after the construction of the Kapchorwa-Bukwo Road.

Work on the 72 KM- stretch that connects to Suam which has already started is using labour-based technology from the Kapchorwa and Bukwo communities.

An engineer from the Ministry of Works for Mbale center Isaac Matovu said the labour-based technology would create employment for the local people and help the communities around fight poverty at household level.

He said the road would cost the government about Shs3 billion. Mr Matovu said this in Kapchorwa last week.

He urged the local populace to supervise the road works, monitor the progress, evaluate and report immediately to ensure that the government gets real value for money.

Three contractors have been assigned to work on the impassable road.

The road had forced cyclists to connect to Bukwo through Kitale in Kenya which covers a distance of 263 Km.

The Woman MP for Bukwo Everlyn Tete said the mudslides at Chepsower sub-county had cut off Kapchorwa.
