Canada set to boost free learning With Sh450m (17/12/06)

Canada has pledged to give Sh450 million for the free primary education programme

The funds will be used to buy learning materials for the country's 7.6 million pupils, said ambassador to Kenya Ross Hynes, while signing a memorandum of understanding with Finance minister Amos Kimunya.

The disbursement brings to Sh1.7 billion the funds Canada has so far given for the programme since its inception in 2003.

Mr Hynes praised Kenya for allocating huge resources to education. The envoy said the Sh500 billion Kenya Education Support Programme launched last year by the Education ministry would help spur education standards and quality.

Since free schooling was started, 1.7 million more children have enrolled in primary schools. At the beginning of 2003, only 5.9 million children were enrolled in the country's 18,500 schools.

The donation comes a month after World Bank approved a delayed Sh5.6 billion loan for the education sector.
