Kenya eyes Malaysia livestock export deal (14/12/06)

Kenyan livestock traders could soon secure a lucrative export deal to Malaysia.

Livestock Traders Marketing Society Chief Executive officer, Mr Adan Dualle, said a Malaysian delegation is in the country on a fact-finding mission.

He said the Society, the Government, Snow Mountain PLC of Australia and the Malaysian Government officials were in talks to facilitate the livestock export.

Dualle said a veterinary official from Malaysia, Dr Syed Mohamed, met top Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development officials.

He said the official also the Veterinary Service Department officials where they discussed the status of Kenya's livestock disease control.

Dualle said that the official also visited the Athi River-based Kenya Meat Commission and the Mombasa slaughter house in Mariakani where he assessed safety and hygiene standards.

Other places visited by the official included the LTMSK ranches in Taita Taveta district, which are declared disease free zones.

The ranches are used as breeding areas for livestock meant for export to Mauritius. A meeting with officials from the Supreme Council for Muslims in Kenya also took place.

Dualle said there would be a follow-up visit by a high-powered delegation of Malaysian officials led by the country's Minister for Agriculture and livestock importers scheduled for February.

He was optimistic that the minister's visit would culminate into an export order.
