MP pledges more efficient CDF team (06/11/06)

A new Saboti constituency development fund committee is to be named

Area MP Davies Nakitare said yesterday that there were irregularities in the way the team he disbanded last week managed the kitty. He told journalists that he expected the new committee to run the funds better, and urged the residents not to worry.

According to parliamentary regulations on CDF management, the team would consist of the district officer, two councillors, two representatives of religious organisations, one from NGOs and at least two of women and youth groups.

But he said no "single penny" from the fund had been misappropriated, contrary to reports that the Government would next week send auditors to check the books of accounts.

There have been complaints from residents, with some alleging that projects said to have been initiated through the kitty could not be seen.

Local Ford Kenya followers have announced a plan to hold a demonstration in Kitale Town next week to protest against what they termed misuse of funds.

But the MP denied the claims, saying that the money was intact. He challenged the party followers to prove their allegations.

"In fact, we have just received the Sh56 million that is supposed to go into various projects in the district that will be given out without favour," he added.

He would be the last person to misuse public funds, he said, and termed people attacking him his political enemies.

Earlier, Mr Nakitare gave the Government three days to remove a district development official and threatened to have him ejected by the people.

Last week, at the burial of a constituent, the MP sacked all the CDF officials. But leaders Jeff Wabuge, Jennifer Masis and Maurice Nangole called for an audit of the kitty.
