Italy allocates 4 million Euros to alleviate food crisis in Somalia (01/09/08)

The Directorate General for Development Cooperation, which is the department within the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Government's aid programmes, has contributed 4 million Euros in response to the humanitarian crisis in Somalia.

The living conditions of the Somali people worsen day by day; according to the latest humanitarian reports, 3.2 million Somalis are now in need of assistance as a result of severe drought, record levels of inflation and the co-nsistent lack of security and political stability.

This contribution will be managed by ICRC and WFP under the auspices of the Italian Cooperation Office based in Nairobi.

In addition to this contribution, the Italian government has allocated 3 million Euros in support of the immediate needs of IDPs and 10 million Euros to ensure delivery of services in Somalia as well as in support of the reconciliation process.
