US offers Nigeria N2.9 billion agricultural assistance (26/08/08)

The US said yesterday in Abuja that it would provide $25 million (about N2.9 billion) as agricultural development assistance to Nigeria.

Mrs Lisa Piascek, the Charge d'Affaires of the American Embassy in Nigeria disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Dr Sayyadi Ruma, the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources.

Piascek said the amount was part of the total of N90.7 billion (about 770 million dollars) provided by the American government as its contribution to the global food crisis fund.

She said that the global food crisis was a challenge to Nigeria to increase its agricultural productivity, given its responsibility to feed not only its citizens but also it neighbours.

Responding, Ruma informed his guest that the government has concluded plans to increase the country's silo storage capacity to over 700,000 tonnes by the first quarter of 2009.

He, therefore, urged the US to avail Nigeria of its expertise in the areas of processing and storage of agricultural products.

The minister reiterated the government's commitment toward ensuring that the country's agricultural products competed favourably in the international market by ensuring compliance with international best practices.

He, however, noted that Nigeria's march towards agricultural revolution was being hampered by some challenges including guaranteeing affordability and availability of inputs.
