Youth housing project announced (30/07/08)

The project of construction of economic houses for the youth will soon be expanded to all provinces of Angola.

This was announced Saturday in central Huambo province by Angolan minister of Youth and Sports, Marcos Barrica.

The minister who said so while witnessing the laying of the foundation stone symbolising the start of the construction of 92 economic houses in Huambo, said a total of 1,600 to 2,000 houses will be built throughout the country under the ‘Angola Youth’ programme.

‘This project will be a continued act and will cover the whole country, with a view to reducing the shortage of houses for the youths, in which we are counting on assistance from the local governments,’ he said.

He said the criteria for access to the houses in respect will be established by the local Governments, but priority will be given to newly married youths, newly graduates, unmarried mothers, demobilised soldiers and young entrepreneurs.

He said the beneficiaries shall be between the age of 18 and 30, have a source of revenue to refund the house, have an account with the Savings and Credits Bank (BPC) and should not sell the house to third parties.

In his turn, Huambo provincial governor, Paulo Cassoma, who led the foundation stone, said the project will lessen the housing crisis.

He said as well the project will also operate as an incentive to the youths’ participation in the process of reconstruction of the country.

Under the project being carried out by a Chinese company, 92 houses will be built in five months time. Its first phase will benefit the districts of Caála with 52 houses and Ecunha with 40.
