Uganda: Sh2 Billion set to fix Mukono landing site (07/07/08)

The Kiyindi landing site in the Mukono district of Uganda is being revamped.

The LC5 vice-chairman, Livingstone Zziwa, said the work would cost sh2.5 billion. "Construction is progressing well and a fridge, ice plant, water jet and offices will be installed." he told journalists at his office last week.

The five-month overhaul is funded under a Uganda Government-African Development Bank partnership. It seeks to ensure good fishing practices and reduce post-harvest losses in one of the country's leading fishing zones.

Kiyindi is one of the three landing sites on Lake Victoria in Mukono. Others are Ssenyi and Katosi.

Zziwa said Lwampanga landing site in Nakasongola district would also be rehabilitated.

"We lose a lot of fish due to poor handling from the landing site to the market. This is what the project seeks to eliminate," he said.

"Mukono is also losing colossal sums of money that could be remitted in taxes. A lot of fish has also perished while being transported due to poor roads."
